Project Overview
We are a research team based at Northeastern University London, investigating the origins of West End theatre in London for a project funded by the NULab for Texts, Maps, and Networks:
Principal Investigator:
Dr Peter Maber (Associate Professor in English)
Researchers:
Aneta Anichkina (third-year English Major)
Miriam Cruz (third-year English Major)
Dr Tomas Elliott (Assistant Professor in English)
Anna Langston (third-year English Major)
Dr Flora Lisica (Assistant Professor in English)
Amy March (third-year History Major)
Isabel Snowdon (second-year History Major)
Our project maps the origins and development of theatre in London’s West End between 1660 and 1812 (the date of the final and surviving Theatre Royal, Drury Lane).
The map uses layers to show the development of the theatres across time. Pop-up boxes display key information on dimensions such as dates in use, architecture, key people and works performed.
The Interactive Map
How to Use the Map
In the top left-hand corner, click the right arrow button and select ‘Legend’. Now you can select different layers. Select the theatres you wish to view by time period, and add the historical map you want to view them on; or deselect all maps to view on the present-day map.
On the map, the theatres are represented by dots coloured by time period. Click on the dots to view information about the theatres derived from our research.
You can zoom in and out by using the + and – buttons.
